We’re thrilled to present to you new fundraising campaign on Help Each Other! Support independent media by donating to MediaZona! The word “zona” in Russian slang means a penal colony. MediaZona focuses in covering stories from the courts, law enforcement, and the prison system.
MediaZona was founded by members of the “Pussy Riot” Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova following sentences of nearly two years after they were convicted of “hooliganism” motivated by “religious hatred” for a punk prayer in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. In addition to its purpose of shedding light on injustices in Russia’s courts, law enforcement and prison systems, Alyokhina and Tolokonnikova said MediaZona was created to fill the void left by the Kremlin’s crackdown on Russian independent media.
“There is hardly any political issues left in Russia outside of courtrooms — and there is a great need for transparency and media coverage of things that are happening down there, so we hope that MediaZona will help close that gap and change the face of independent Russian media,” stressed Alyokhina when MediaZona was founded. In a 2016 interview with Reuters, Tolokonnikova said “The real punk is to build institutions”.
On 30 January 2021, during the protests after Alexei Navalny who recovered from poisoning in Berlin, Germany and returned to Russia was jailed the editor-in-chief of Mediazona Sergey Smirnov was detained by police near his home for allegedly breaking the law on protests.
